01 · The problem

Where they started.

Most analytics tools work by following people: a cookie or an identifier on the device, an IP address in the logs, a profile that grows over time. That is why almost every site has to ask for consent before it can count a single visit.

The idea behind wholestory.world was the opposite: give site owners the numbers they need without collecting anything about the people behind them.

03 · How we built it

The approach.

  1. Nothing stored on the device

    No cookie, no local storage, no identifier of any kind. A visitor is recognised for one day by a hash the server computes and cannot reverse.

  2. The day's key is thrown away

    The hash is salted with a random value replaced every day, and yesterday's is deleted. The same person is a different number tomorrow, to the service as much as to anyone else.

  3. The address stops at the door

    The IP address is used to compute the hash and look up a country, then dropped by the first service that sees it. It reaches no queue, no log and no database.

  4. One tag, 583 bytes

    One script tag in the head and nothing else to configure. It counts pageviews, single-page navigations and any event you name, and the build fails if it grows past a kilobyte.

Privacy as the design, not a setting

There is nothing to switch off because nothing personal is collected in the first place. The product shows that useful analytics and respect for visitors are not a trade-off.

What changed.
